Mindfulness meditation, gentle mindful movement, and hiking in the fresh mountain air

Our retreat is located in Asturias, Spain's best kept secret and home to Hotel Fuentes de Lucía, an ideal mountain retreat, which is an oasis of serenity that is located within Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Reserve, a pristine biosphere reserve that has a rich cultural heritage. Surrounded by dramatic peaks, deep gorges, and crystal clear rivers, you will breathe in the pure mountain air, relax your body, calm your mind, and stretch your limbs. When we held our first retreat in Asturias during 2015, we were captivated by the breathtaking beauty and pristine nature.

Begin the day with a gentle mindful movement practice followed by a hearty breakfast in the main dining room, before the day's hiking adventure unfolds. We will walk beautiful mountain trails, accompanied by a friendly and knowledgeable guide who will support your experience with an inspiring blend of scenic hiking, historical insights, traditional customs, and wonderful food.

In a supportive small group setting, you will learn about and practice mindfulness, Awareness Through Movement®, and mindful movement (qigong). These mind-body skills can be applied to your personal and professional development. No prior experience is necessary.

THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Mindful Movement for Self-Regulation with Dr. Larry Cammarata

Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES) is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to  sponsor continuing education for Psychologists. Commonwealth Educational Seminars maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Psychologists receive 9 continuing education hours upon completing this program.

This educational program integrates the application of mindfulness, mindful movement, and body awareness in the treatment of medical and psychological disorders. The skill of enhanced body awareness can support the presence of both client and clinician. Mindful movement can add dynamism and energy to the treatment process, literally “moving” our clients towards the experience of wholeness while facilitating embodied insight.  We will examine mindfulness, mindful movement, and body-oriented strategies designed to facilitate self-regulation, mood stabilization, and enhanced concentration. The application of mindful movement and body-oriented interventions in the treatment of various psychological disorders will also be covered.

At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

Describe the essential elements that define mindfulness.

List the key components of mindful movement.

Summarize the status of current research in the field of mindful movement.

Assess how the practice of mindful movement can be applied in the treatment of psychological disorders.

Define self-regulation and mindful movement, explaining their relationship to one another.

Explain how acceptance-based interventions such as self-compassion meditation complement mindfulness-based interventions.

List the benefits of mindful movement and body-awareness practices in the context of mindfulness-based therapy.

Explain why mindfulness is not always sufficient to reduce suffering and distress.

Awareness Through Movement® with Lavinia Plonka, GCFP

The Feldenkrais Method offers participants a somatic learning experience that connects brain and body. Operating from the workshop theme of "Balance, Vitality and Joy," the classes, called Awareness Through Movement lessons, use safe, gentle movements, combined with attention; the Feldenkrais Method helps people discover and re-pattern habits that may be interfering with their optimum functioning. Awareness Through Movement lessons, most of which are done lying down, have been shown to reduce stress, increase flexibility, increase vitality and create a sense of dynamic stability for the whole self. Lavinia's choice of lessons (there are over 1000) have been carefully curated to support participants' enjoyment of the walking environment of Asturias.
